Epic Ancestors of the Sunjata Era: Oral Tradition from the Maninka of Guinea

A collection of seven variants of the Sunjata Epic narrated by Maninka bards in Guinea, recorded and marketed by local entrepreneurs during the Sekou Touré era. The narrators include Sanassy Kouyaté of Jelibakoro, Jeli Fayala Kouyaté of Siguiri, Jeli Mori Kouyaté of Niagassola, Mamady Diabaté of Kankan, Mamadi Condé of Fadama, and Demba Kouyaté of Dinli. Illustrations include seven pen and ink drawings by Mohamed (Chejan) Kromah and Sidiki (Oscar) Doumbia.
